Most horses in the UK are getting some omega-3. The question is whether they're getting the forms the body actually uses — EPA and DHA — at a level that's sufficient to make a difference.

Most owners who come to Synaxis Core have been feeding their horse carefully, and want to know it’s actually making a difference.

If your horse relies heavily on hay or has restricted turnout through winter, its omega-3 status is likely lower than you think. And as conditions change through spring — more turnout, more work, more environmental load — the case for ensuring adequate EPA and DHA becomes stronger, not weaker.

What the Protocol is and isn’t

The Synaxis Core 90 Day Protocol is a defined intervention:

  1. a biologically relevant dose of DHA and EPA,
  2. delivered consistently,
  3. over a period long enough for incorporation into tissue.

It is the minimum meaningful window in which the biology can work.

The structure reflects how fatty acids are incorporated into tissue, not how supplements are typically sold.

In a randomised controlled trial, algae-derived DHA supplementation increased plasma DHA levels and was associated with measurable changes in airway inflammatory markers in horses.

What to expect over 90 days

Changes are not immediate, and not all are visible.

  • Weeks 1 to 2

    Little visible change.

    Plasma DHA rising but not yet influencing membrane function significantly

  • Weeks 3 to 8

    Coat and skin begin to shift.

    Skin cell membranes turn over rapidly and reflect fatty acid status relatively quickly

  • Weeks 9 to 12

    Structural change becomes apparent.

    Deeper tissues take longer to reflect changes in membrane composition

At six weeks and again at the end of the protocol, we'll ask you a few short questions about what you've observed. If we haven't heard from you by week eight, we'll follow up. This isn't a review request.

It's how we build an honest picture of how the protocol performs across different horses — and how we refine how it's described.

What Omega-3 (DHA and EPA) do

DHA and EPA are incorporated into cell membranes throughout the body. Their effects show up where membrane function matters most — recovery, joints, respiratory function, and skin.

This is why changes don’t appear instantly — they reflect structural incorporation over time.

What happens after 90 days

The protocol has a defined end point. So does the decision that follows.

If you've seen no change, stop. Don't continue. We'll be in touch at the end of the protocol — that's when we'll ask what you observed. Tell us honestly. That information matters, and we'd rather understand it than have you carry on without clarity.

If you've seen benefit, the biology tells you what to do next. DHA and EPA are not stored in large reserves. Membrane composition reflects current intake. If supplementation stops, the gains made over 90 days will gradually reverse.


Continuing at the same dose maintains what the protocol established. A monthly subscription does that at the lowest per-bottle cost.

If you've seen benefit but want to manage cost, that's a legitimate call — and there's a sensible way to do it. Horses on good-quality grass in summer are getting omega-3 from fresh forage, athough it's ALA which needs conversion.
So while that doesn't fully replace direct DHA and EPA, it can change the baseline for EPA. If you want to pause over summer and supplement through winter — when forage quality drops and hay becomes the primary roughage source — that's a reasonable seasonal approach.

Winter supplementation: approximately October to April, depending on turnout and forage quality.

If you pause entirely and restart the following autumn, treat it as a new protocol. Don't assume residual benefit carries over.
